Project Detail

Browns Farm Philippi is situated on the Cape Flats area, south of the Cape Town International Airport. The northern boundary is Lansdowne Rd and the southern boundary is the Cape Flats railway line. It is bounded by Vanguard Drive on the west and the R300 and Lansdowne Rd on the east. It comprises of approximately 9 891 formal properties on the SAP system (GIS – 10,736). There are 6,793 informal dwellings. The area is mainly low-cost housing, usually characterised by high levels of leakage and low levels of payment.

The tender document required the contractor to

  • Ascertain the reasons why the flow in the meter at the corner of Lansdowne and New Eisleben supplying the Philippi area was not affected by the zero pressure test
  • Separate the Philippi Industrial area from the Philippi residential area.
  • Identify and rectify the causes of the low pressures in the vicinity of erf 5084.
  • Analyse the flow and pressure loggings and to verify all information provided in the document prior to finalizing the design.
  • Design the PRV installations for a 0-10 year and a 10-30 year horizon.

The installation in a reinforced concrete chamber has a 200 Ø strainer, a 200 Ø Sensus WPD meter, a 200mm Ø Bermad PRV with V-port plug, a 50mm Ø Vent-O-Mat air release valve and associated pipework. The pipework was designed so that a 250 Ø strainer, a 250 Ø Sensus WPD meter, a 250mm Ø Bermad PRV and associated pipework could be installed when the flow increases in the future.

The gate valve immediately downstream of the supply point is now the divisional valve in the PRV installation. This enables the PRV to operate when this valve is closed and the two 250 Ø AVK Resilient Seal Gate Valves on the PRV by-pass are open. During maintenance and when it is operationally necessary, the divisional valve can be opened and the two 250 valves on the PRV by-pass closed.

The installation in a reinforced concrete chamber has a 300 Ø strainer, a 300 Ø Sensus WPD meter, a 300mm Ø Bermad PRV with V-port plug, a 50mm Ø Vent-O-Mat air release valve and associated pipework.

The existing butterfly valve downstream of the bulk meter is now the divisional valve in the PRV installation. This enables the PRV to operate when this valve is closed and the two 300 Ø AVK Resilient Seal Gate Valves on the PRV by-pass are open. During maintenance and when it is operationally necessary, the divisional valve can be opened and the two 300 valves on the PRV by-pass closed.
